Spider Mites

Yellow or bronze stippling on the upper leaf surface, tiny moving dots and (in later stages) fine webbing under the leaves and on bud sites. Two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) is the usual indoor culprit. A female lays ~100 eggs and hatches in 3 days at 27 C, so a population can double every 2-3 days - treat within 24-48 hours of detection.

What usually causes it

  • Hot, dry conditions (above ~27 C and below ~50% RH / high VPD) accelerate the life cycle
  • Introduction on incoming clones, soil, pets or clothing
  • High nitrogen producing soft, lush foliage that mites prefer
  • Lack of preventative IPM (no predatory mites, no scouting)
