Broad Mite, Russet Mite or Viroid Damage

New growth is twisted, narrow, glossy or blistered, often with a wet, lacquered look. Broad and russet mites are microscopic (60x+ loupe needed) and frequently misdiagnosed as pH issues or genetics. If a clean miticide programme does not resolve the symptoms over 2-3 weeks, consider Hop Latent Viroid (HpLVd) or other viroid infection - these are increasingly common in cannabis cuttings and are not curable.

What usually causes it

  • Broad mite or russet mite infestation - introduced on clones, clothing or tools
  • Warm conditions favour russet mites; warm + humid favours broad mites
  • Hop Latent Viroid (HpLVd) or other viroid contamination from infected mother stock
