Airy or Loose Buds

Small, light, fluffy buds with elongated stems between calyxes and sparse trichomes. Most commonly caused by under-lighting during flower or chronic heat stress, but also normal genetics in some sativa-dominant cultivars. PK boosters and bloom feeds will not compensate for insufficient light.

What usually causes it

  • Average canopy PPFD below ~600 umol/m2/s during flowering
  • Lights-on temperatures above 28-30 C in late flower (heat-stretching the calyxes)
  • Low DLI from a short photoperiod, weak fixture or excessive lamp distance
  • Sativa-dominant genetics that naturally produce open structure
