Photosynthetic Photon Efficacy (PPE)
A grow light efficiency metric showing how many usable photons a fixture produces per watt. PPE helps compare lighting systems beyond wattage alone.
Photosynthetic Photon Efficacy (PPE) measures how efficiently a grow light converts electrical power into photosynthetically active photons. It is expressed in micromoles per joule (umol/J).
PPE helps indoor growers compare fixtures because wattage alone only tells how much power a light consumes, not how much useful plant light it produces. A fixture with higher PPE produces more PAR photons for the same electrical input, which can reduce operating cost or increase light output within the same power budget.
Why PPE matters:
- Compares fixture efficiency across models and technologies
- Helps estimate electricity cost per delivered photon
- Supports lighting layouts when combined with PPFD maps
- Separates efficiency from total output and coverage area
PPE should not be the only buying criterion. Spectrum, thermal management, dimming, reliability, light distribution, ingress protection, serviceability, and real canopy PPFD are also important. A highly efficient fixture still needs the right layout to deliver uniform light to the crop.
